Dartmouth Launches Data Management Planning Site

This website provides guidance and suggestions for Dartmouth researchers who need to create data management and data sharing plans as part of a proposal to external funding agencies. The site outlines the current NSF and NIH requirements, provides a checklist to help you understand what issues need to be addressed, useful links, and sample plans. While there is no single department on campus that can answer all of the questions around data management, we have identified individuals and groups who are available to help. We will be updating the site regularly as new information is received from funding agencies and principal investigators.

Research Professor Awards

American Cancer Society (ACS)

LOI Due 2/1/2011

The ACS offers a limited number of grants to investigators in mid-career who have made seminal contributions that have changed the direction of cancer research. Furthermore, it is expected that these investigators will continue to provide leadership in their research area. The grantee is required to be a spokesperson for the ACS and for cancer research.
Eligibility In general, applicants will recently have attained the rank of full professor or equivalent and must not have held the rank of full professor or equivalent for more than 15 years. Applicants must at the time of application be United States citizens, noncitizen nationals, or permanent residents of the United States.

Career Development Award

American Diabetes Association (ADA)

Deadline: Jan 15, 2011

This one time award provides up to $172,500 per year for up to five years. The maximum total direct costs cannot exceed $150,000 per year and the maximum total indirect costs cannot exceed 15% of the direct costs.

The award is designed to assist outstanding assistant professor-level faculty investigators in conducting diabetes-related research. The award supports an individual's salary and research project to enable the investigator to advance his or her career as an independent investigator.

Postdoctoral Research Fellowships for Basic and Physician Scientists

Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation Cancer Research Fund
Deadline March 15, 2011

Award stipends are $50,000 for level I and $60,000 for level II in the first year. In the second year, award stipends are $50,000 for level I and $60,000 for level II. Third year stipends are $50,000 and $60,000 respectively.

The foundation sponsors theoretical and experimental research relevant to the study of cancer and the search for cancer causes, mechanisms, therapies, and prevention. These scholarships are offered to encourage promising young investigators to pursue careers in cancer research.

The proposed investigation must be conducted at a university, hospital, or research institution. Postdoctoral training in the same institution in which the applicant received their degree is discouraged, particularly if it was in the same department.
Eligibility Awards are made to institutions for the support of the fellow under direct supervision of the Sponsor.

Applicants must have completed one or more of the following degrees or its equivalent: M.D., Ph.D., D.D.S., or D.V.M.

For level one funding, basic and physician scientist applicants must have received their degrees no more than one year prior to the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) meeting at which their applications are to be considered. D.V.M. applicants must have received their degrees no more than three years prior to the SAC meeting. For level two funding, physician scientists (M.D., D.D.S., D.V.M. or the equivalent) must have completed their residencies and clinical training no more than three years prior to the SAC meeting at which their applications are to be considered.

Candidates applying to work in foreign-based or United States government laboratories may be awarded a fellowship if they are considered to be especially meritorious or if the program represents an unusual opportunity for postdoctoral training. Foreign candidates may apply to do their research only in the United States. Only candidates who are beginning their first full-time postdoctoral research fellowship are eligible.

Only one fellowship application will be accepted from a sponsor or fellow per review session; there is no limit, however, to the number of applications from an institution.

No more than two Damon Runyon-Walter Winchell Fellows will be funded to work with the same sponsor at any given time.

Proposals due (new applications) February 1, 2011 at.11:59 p.m. ET

This call for graduate fellowship proposals, entitled NASA Earth and Space Science Fellowship (NESSF) Program – 2011/2012 Academic Year, solicits applications from accredited U.S. Universities on behalf of individuals pursuing Masters or Doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees in Earth and space sciences, or related disciplines, at respective institutions. NIH eRA eSubmission Items of Interest - December 7, 2010

New Page Limit Restrictions for Individual Career Development (K) applications

NIH will be enforcing the following new PHS Career Development Supplemental form attachment page limits immediately after the January 7 AIDS deadline:

·         The Mentoring Plan attachment will be limited to 6 pages.
·         The Statements by Mentor, Co-Mentors, Contributors attachment will be limited to 6 pages.
·         The Description of Institutional Environment attachment will be limited to 1 page.
·         The Commitment to Candidate's Research Career Development attachment is limited to 1 page.

To provide consistency between AIDS and non-AIDS K applications that could potentially be reviewed together, applicants to the January 7, 2011 AIDS deadline will get warnings if the above page limits are exceeded, but no corrective action will be needed. The warning message text will be adjusted next week to reflect this exception. The validations will be upgraded from warnings to errors and the message text readjusted for deadlines after January 7.   Note that the new application guide posted November 24, 2010 already reflects the page limit changes. See NIH Guide Notice NOT-OD-11-027.

Check Commons Status - Don’t Rely on Email Notifications

Email can be unreliable. Email notifications sent by eRA can be blocked or caught by spam filters for various reasons. It is your responsibility to track your application through to a viewable application image in eRA Commons, correcting any errors encountered along the way. Remember… IF YOU CAN’T VIEW IT, WE CAN’T REVIEW IT!!

eRA Prepares for Discontinuation of the Error Correction Window

As of November 19, failing to provide a Contact Email address in box 5 of the SF424 (R&R) cover will no longer result in an eRA error. Since this field had been an NIH requirement, but is not marked as required on the federal-wide form, it has consistently been in the list of the top 5 errors encountered by applicants. Please continue to provide the information – we still really want it. If not provided, however, we will no longer stop the application from going forward. We will simply use the Authorized Organization Representative (AOR) email from box 19 in its place and provide a warning to let you know that we’ve done so.

We will be updating the message text for many of our business rule validations on December 16 in preparation for the discontinuation of the error correction window for deadlines on/after January 25. The text changes will provide greater clarity in describing the issue encountered and action required.
