Effective Lab Skills: Managing People, Projects, and Money

Academic scientists face many challenges in running their own lab. Beyond doing good research, lab heads need to consider many practicalities, including managing their staff (hiring, retaining, and motivating), developing reasonable timelines for projects and keeping them on track, and how to properly track grant budgets. Watch this Science Careers live webinar to gain insight from experts related to effective laboratory management skills. During the webinar you'll be able to submit questions live. Don't miss this opportunity to pick the brains of experienced and practiced academic managers.

New Hampshire Sea Grant Deadlines: February

1. The New Hampshire Sea Grant College Program has released its 2012-2013 NOAA Omnibus Request for Proposals.
New Hampshire Sea Grant College Program seeks proposals that address one or more of the marine-related issues identified in the N.H. Sea Grant Strategic Plan (8.5MB pdf), which can be downloaded from this site in PDF format. New Hampshire Sea Grant seeks to foster the highest quality marine research, education and extension efforts. We are especially encouraging proposals in social science in this RFP; creative and rigorously conceived proposals in areas not mentioned in the Strategic Plan are also welcomed. All proposals should contribute to improved understanding, utilization and/or management of coastal and marine resources. We strongly recommend that researchers seek to work with and integrate Sea Grant extension educators into their projects. Electronic submission procedures to NH Sea Grant are available at the NH Sea Grant web site above. Deadline for pre-proposals is February 22, 2011. Link: http://www.seagrant.unh.edu/funding/fundinginfo.html
2. The Northeast Sea Grant Consortium has issued their 2012-2013 Request for Proposals for Social Science Research.

The Northeast Sea Grant College Consortium is calling for regional proposals on the Human Dimensions of Coastal and Marine Ecosystems for one or two years during 2012-2014. The region can include all or parts of the U.S. side of the Gulf of Maine and the New York Bight to Cape May, NJ. Electronic submission procedures to the University of Connecticut are available at the NH Sea Grant web site above. Deadline for pre-proposals is February 22, 2011. CALL FOR LETTERS OF INTENT FOR INNOVATIVE FRONTIER
RESEARCH GRANTS: AWARD YEAR 2012
The Human Frontier Science Program supports international preferably intercontinental collaborations in basic life science research with emphasis placed on innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to fundamental investigations. Applications are invited for grants to support frontier approaches to understanding complex mechanisms of living organisms. Applicants are expected to develop novel lines of research distinct from their ongoing research. Preliminary results are not required.
There are two types of Grant: Young Investigators’ Grants are for teams of scientists who are all within 5 years of establishing an independent laboratory and within 10 years of obtaining their PhDs. Program Grants are for independent scientists at all stages of their careers, although the participation of younger scientists is especially encouraged.
Grants provide 3 years support for 2 – 4 member teams, with not more than one member from any one country, unless critical for the innovative nature of the project, which is an important selection criterion. Applicants may establish a local or national interdisciplinary collaboration as a component of an international team but will be considered as 1.5 team members for budgetary purposes. Awards are dependent upon team size and successful teams will receive up to $450,000 per year. The principal applicant must be located in one of the member countries (Australia, Canada, the European Union, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, the Republic of Korea, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States) but co-investigators may be located in any countr

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS)

Translational Research Program
Mar 01, 2011 Letter of Intent
Mar 15, 2011 Application

http://www.leukemia-lymphoma.org/all_page?item_id=11620

The Translational Research Program was established to encourage and provide support for new and novel clinical research. The goal of the program is to accelerate transfer of findings from the laboratory to clinical application. The program's purpose is to fund research that shows high promise for translating basic biomedical knowledge to prevention or new treatments and, ultimately, to prolong and enhance life. A principal intent of the program is to permit the acquisition of sufficient data to apply to an appropriate agency or sponsor for sustained support.

The Translational Research Program (TRP) was developed to encourage and provide early-stage support for clinical research in leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, which is intended to develop innovative approaches to treatment, diagnosis or prevention.

Applications are sought proposing novel approaches to the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Proposals should be based on molecular, cellular or integrated systems findings and be conceptually innovative. The application should have a clear plan for the clinical exploitation of the studies proposed and the results expected. This feature of the proposal will be an important consideration of the review process. While work directed at a further elucidation and understanding of the fundamental cellular and molecular biology of neoplastic lymphohematopoietic cells is a research priority of LLS, the Translational Research Program is specifically intended for the support of work which is clearly clinical in orientation.

NSF Seeks Feedback on Review Process

The National Science Board’s (NSB) Merit Review Task Force is undertaking a thorough review of the National Science Foundation's two merit review criteria (Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts). The merit review process is at the heart of NSF's mission, and the merit review criteria form the critical base for that process. Moreover, in the recently enacted America COMPETES Reauthorization Act, the Broader Impacts Review Criterion was specifically mentioned.

The Task Force is now gathering input from a wide variety of stakeholder groups, and will be developing its report and recommendations during 2011.
