NASA Announces Upcoming Research Deadlines for Earth Sciences

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES IN SPACE AND EARTH SCIENCES (ROSES)–2012
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Research Announcement (NRA), entitled Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences (ROSES)–2012, solicits basic and applied research in support of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate (SMD). This NRA covers all aspects of basic and applied supporting research and technology in space and Earth sciences, including, but not limited to: theory, modeling, and analysis of SMD science data; aircraft, stratospheric balloon, suborbital rocket, International Space Station, and suborbital reusable launch vehicle investigations; development of experiment techniques suitable for future SMD space missions; development of concepts for future SMD space missions; development of advanced technologies relevant to SMD missions; development of techniques for and the laboratory analysis of both extraterrestrial samples returned by spacecraft, as well as terrestrial samples that support or otherwise help verify observations from SMD Earth system science missions; determination of atomic and composition parameters needed to analyze space data, as well as returned samples from the Earth or space; Earth surface observations and field campaigns that support SMD science missions; development of integrated Earth system models;
development of systems for applying Earth science research data to societal needs; and development of applied information systems applicable to SMD objectives and data.

Proposal due dates are given in Tables 2 and 3 of this NRA, which will be posted at

ARPA-E Open Funding Opportunity for Energy

To address the challenges imposed by the rapidly evolving global energy market, ARPA-E seeks to support transformational research in all areas of energy R&D, including resource identification, extraction, transportation and use, and energy generation, storage, transmission and use in both the transportation and stationary power sectors. Areas of research responsive to this FOA include (but are not limited to) electricity generation by both renewable and non-renewable means, electricity transmission, storage, and distribution; energy efficiency for buildings, manufacturing and commerce, and personal use; and all aspects of transportation, including the production and distribution of both renewable and non-renewable fuels, electrification, and energy efficiency in transportation.

The result of a successful ARPA-E project will be such that at the end of the project the transformational technology will be sufficiently advanced and well defined in terms of performance and risk to promote next-stage development or transfer of the project to next-stage developers. Projects under this FOA must be aimed at more than progress toward identified project goals; the project must be aimed at actual delivery of these project goals. The R&D effort on later-stage technology development projects must carry the risk reduction process for the technology to the point at which entrepreneurial decisions can be made with confidence.

New Research Grants for Novel Approaches to Lupus

New Research Grants for Novel Approaches to Lupus
Grant Application Deadline: May 31, 2012
The Lupus Research Institute (LRI) invites applications for financial support for idea-driven, novel research projects relevant to basic, translational or clinical investigation in lupus. The Novel Research Grant program will run in parallel with the LRI’s new global Distinguished Innovator Award program.

Research applications will be judged principally on novelty of the hypotheses, scientific quality, strength of approach, relevance to lupus, and likelihood of success. Creativity will be valued. Rationale for the hypotheses proposed rather than amount of preliminary data will be emphasized.

Continuations of long-term research projects are not appropriate
for this submission.

Projects on aspects of the disease that have been less extensively studied and applications from investigators in diverse disciplines, including those who may not have previously worked in lupus, are encouraged.

While the Institute encourages projects based on novel explorations of human lupus biology—innovative studies that use human material to address the physiological, cellular, molecular and/or genetic basis of human lupus—projects solely based on cellular, molecular, and/or animal models are also encouraged.

Both established and new investigators may apply. Applicants should hold advanced degrees and be affiliated with institutions of higher learning in the United States. Grant application research plans are limited to six pages. Annual funding of up to $100,000 per year, beginning December 2012, for a term of up to three years, will be awarded for approved projects.

2013 McKnight Memory and Cognitive Disorders Awards

http://www.mcknight.org/neuroscience/news/news_detail.aspx?itemID=3728&catID=85&typeID=2

The McKnight Endowment Fund for Neuroscience supports innovative research designed to bring science closer to the day when diseases of the brain can be accurately diagnosed, prevented, and treated. To this end, the McKnight Memory and Cognitive Disorders Award assists scientists working to apply the knowledge achieved through basic research to human brain disorders that affect memory or cognition.

USE OF AWARD FUNDS

We are interested in proposals that address memory or cognition under normal and pathological conditions. This includes proposals that address mechanisms of memory or cognition at the synaptic, cellular, or behavioral level in animals, including humans. We are particularly interested in proposals that incorporate fundamentally new approaches, as well as those that involve human experimentation. Collaborative and cross-disciplinary applications are encouraged.

Projects restricted to the creation of conventional mouse knockouts in candidate disease genes identified by association studies, or to broadly overexpress those genes, are discouraged. In addition, projects to perform genetic interaction screens on disease genes in model organisms (yeast, worm, fly, fish) will not be considered, unless the project includes substantive specific aims that investigate the disease relevance of any new genes so discovered in human or mammalian model systems.

ELIGIBILITY

Investigators who are United States citizens or lawful permanent residents conducting research at institutions within the United States are invited to apply. All PIs on the project must be U.S. citizens or have permanent resident status at the time of submission. Applicants must be in tenured or tenure-track faculty positions; research faculty in annually renewable positions are ineligible. Applicants may not be employees of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute or scientists within the intramural program of the National Institutes of Health. Applicants may not hold another McKnight Award that would overlap with the Memory and Cognitive Disorders Award. We are interested in geographic, gender, and racial diversity and we encourage women and minorities, as well as scientists from around the U.S., to apply. Funds may be used toward a variety of research activities, but not the recipient’s salary. The candidate’s other sources of funding will be considered when selecting awards.

SELECTION PROCESS

Application forms are linked below. You may also email or call the office of The McKnight Endowment Fund for Neuroscience (info@mcknight.org; 612-333-4220). The deadline for submission is April 2, 2012. In mid-June, the selection committee will invite a small number of applicants to submit more detailed proposals, which will be due September 10, 2012. Funding begins February 1, 2013. Please email ONE PDF file and include the application form, the 2-page project description, and a 4-page NIH bio sketch to: neuro@mcknight.org (references may be outside the 2-page limit, but may be no more than two pages). Please do not include a budget. If you do not receive email confirmation of receipt of your LOI within 3 business days, please contact Eileen Maler at 612-333-4220 or emaler@mcknight.org.

The Endowment Fund will fund up to four awards, each providing $100,000 per year for three years.
