PhRMA Foundation Announces New Grant Program in

Washington, D.C. (November 20, 2012) — The PhRMA Foundation has established a new program to support scientists in the field of Translational Medicine and Therapeutics (TMT). By distributing annual funds of up to $350,000 through Research Starter Grants and Postdoctoral Fellowships, the program aims to build a cadre of highly trained and qualified TMT investigators.

TMT focuses on improving health care and medicine by bridging basic and clinical research. The science links clinical need to basic research and the resulting novel discoveries to therapeutic outcomes, addressing patients’ needs in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, and advancing development of medical therapies worldwide.

Working collaboratively to translate clinical need into research and research findings into treatments, scientists often gain deeper insight into the biological mechanisms they investigate. The TMT grant program supports training and career development for individuals engaged in such research. To this end, the PhRMA Foundation has identified program priorities for the short and long term: support individual grants for early-career academics, and invite potential partners and stakeholders to participate in additional funding for centers of excellence in TMT.

Postdoctoral awards will be offered for a period of two years, with the second year contingent on progress in the first-year activities. Research Starter Grants—which will provide $100,000 for a one-year period—will support the work of academic scientists as they begin careers in TMT. Postdoctoral Fellowships—consisting of a $60,000 annual stipend—will support graduates with doctoral degrees who seek to expand and refine their training in TMT.

Applications must be received by February 1, 2013, so funding can begin on July 1, 2013. Grant recipients will be notified in May. Contact Eileen Cannon at ECannon@phrmafoundation.org or visit www.phrmafoundation.org for more information.

The Fourth Annual Federal Research Update Webinar

For many in higher education, budget constraints have decreased or eliminated funding for attendance at national conferences. In response, the University of Missouri, the National Association of College and University Business Officers, and the Florida High-Tech Corridor Council have arranged with key federal agencies to communicate their annual updates on research priorities and budgets via the internet. The format will allow for questions from participants around the nation. In the past, we have had to charge a subscription fee to recover our costs for the webinar. This year, we are thrilled to report that the Florida High Tech Corridor Council, an economic development initiative of the State University System of Florida, has joined MU and NACUBO to sponsor this event. As a result, the event will be freely available to all interested parties.

Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Seeks Letters of Interest for Undergraduate Conservation Research Program

The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation is seeking short Letters of Interest from nonprofit organizations and academic institutions interested in developing a new nationwide program to engage undergraduate students from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups in rigorous research experiences in conservation biology and other disciplines relevant to land, water, and wildlife conservation. The program will be one of several efforts supported by the foundation to increase diversity in the land and wildlife conservation workforce.
The purpose of the program is to influence student choices regarding college majors, graduate education, and early career opportunities.
While program design will be determined by the grantee ultimately selected to develop and manage the program, the foundation will require all of the following program elements:
1) Research experience — meaningful and rigorous research projects appropriate for undergraduate students in conservation biology and other disciplines relevant to land, water, and wildlife conservation. A significant portion of each student's research experience should provide an opportunity for the student to work closely with scientists employed by conservation organizations (e.g., scientists employed by nongovernmental conservation organizations or governmental natural resource agencies) who are working on applied conservation problems.
2) Field experience — significant time outdoors to build a personal connection with the natural world through data gathering and other scientific work relevant to an assigned research project.
3) Cohort building — research experiences designed to accommodate a team of at least three students working together, as well as other activities to build camaraderie and peer-to-peer networks among program participants.
4) Career training — student exposure to conservation career options and leading professionals from underrepresented groups working in the conservation field.
5) Multiyear engagement — sustained engagement over the course of multiple years (e.g., a program that involves multiple summer experiences or runs year-round over the course of multiple academic years).
Programs also must include a dedicated program director and research mentors, as well as a paid stipend for participants.
The foundation anticipates awarding one grant of up to $500,000 a year for three years to support a single nationwide program that draws students from multiple academic institutions in the United States. A proposed program can consist of a collaboration of multiple organizations and involve multiple field research sites, but the grant will be awarded to a single lead organization.
Visit the DDCF Web site for complete program guidelines and to submit a Letter of Interest.

Simons Foundation Autism Research Initiative Invites Letters of Intent for Pilot and Research Awards

2013 RFA

SFARI mission
The mission of the Simons Foundation Autism Research Initiative (SFARI) is to improve the diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorders by funding, catalyzing and driving research of the greatest quality and relevance.
To this end, we solicit applications for SFARI Awards from individuals who will conduct bold, imaginative, rigorous and relevant research.
Objective of the SFARI Awards
We seek applications from independent investigators who can devote a substantial portion of time to this effort. While we will not require a minimum Principal Investigator (PI) effort, we expect the PI to commit to a level of effort that reflects a leading role in the project. We encourage applications from researchers who are not currently working on autism, but who have expertise that could be brought to bear on this complex disorder. We will also accept collaborative grants involving multiple investigators.
Applicants are strongly advised to familiarize themselves with the work that SFARI currently supports, and to think about how their proposals might complement existing grants.
We expect Simons Investigators to share renewable reagents and data developed with Simons Foundation funds with other qualified investigators. Access to the Simons Simplex Collection (SSC) and the Simons Variation in Individuals Project (Simons VIP), resources of rigorously characterized phenotypic data, genetic data and biomaterials, will be available to all approved scientists through SFARI Base. We encourage applicants to use these resources. Policies regarding acquisition of SSC biospecimens are available online.
In addition to the SFARI Awards described below, the SFARI Explorer Award program accepts applications at any time for rapid review and support through a rolling award program. The SFARI Explorer Award program provides timely resources on a one-time basis, not to exceed $60,000, including indirect costs, to support focused experiments highly relevant to our mission. Further information about this program is available online.
Types of applications
The following applications will be considered:
SFARI Pilot Award
Application type for innovative, high-impact proposals requesting support for small-scale projects or early-stage experiments that will build on preliminary data or a prior track record and lead to competitive applications for funding by SFARI or other organizations. Investigators new to the field of autism are encouraged to apply for Pilot Awards. The maximum budget is $125,000, including indirect costs, per year for up to two (2) years.
SFARI Research Award
Application type for investigators with demonstrated expertise, for proposals requesting support for compelling, high-impact research on an experimental hypothesis for which, in most cases, preliminary data have already been gathered. The foundation will also consider projects focusing on a central hypothesis where success depends on close collaboration between two or more labs. We expect to fund proposals for a maximum of $250,000, including indirect costs, per year for up to three (3) years, but under exceptional circumstances will consider proposals at higher levels. All budgets over $250,000 per year require pre-approval by SFARI science staff (scienceRFA@simonsfoundation.org).
Indirect costs for all SFARI grant types are limited to 20 percent of the modified total direct costs (see SFARI policies).
The Simons Foundation's salary support guidelines are typically identical to those set by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for faculty, fellows and students; however, personnel may request salary support greater than the current maximum NIH salary cap. The maximum salary for SFARI grants will remain at $199,700, prorated according to the personnel’s percent effort on the grant. There is no minimum percent effort required for Principal Investigators or other personnel on any SFARI award type, but it is expected that the PI will join the collaborative community of SFARI Investigators, and he or she will partake in some conferences, workshops and symposia that the foundation organizes. SFARI funds may only be used for personnel considered employees of the grantee institution who are eligible for benefits. Funds may not be used for stipend supplementation unless specifically authorized under the terms of the program from which funds are derived. The Simons Foundation reserves the right to modify budgets when an application has been selected for an award (see SFARI policy).
Eligibility
All applicants and key collaborators must hold a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent degree and have a faculty position or equivalent at a college, university, medical school or other research facility. Applications may be submitted by domestic and foreign nonprofit organizations; public and private institutions, such as colleges, universities, hospitals, laboratories, units of state and local government; and eligible agencies of the federal government. There are no citizenship or country requirements.
Instructions for submission
Applications must be completed electronically and submitted using forms provided at proposalCENTRAL. Please log in as an applicant, scroll to ”Simons Foundation” and click ”Apply Now” for the program. For assistance, please call 800-875-2562 or email pcsupport@altum.com.
