Title: Point-of-Care Diagnostics Grant Initiative
Sponsor: Grand Challenges in Global Health
URL: http://www.grandchallenges.org/diagnostics/Pages/Introduction.aspx
Deadline: February 16, 2010 for letter of inquiry
Amount: up to $3 million over three years
Abstract: The Grand Challenges in Global Health initiative is seeking innovative ideas for diagnostics in the developing world. $30 million in funding is available for Phase I of a new grant program to create technologies and components that can be used to assess multiple conditions and pathogens at the point of care in a variety of settings. Specifically, we seek to create a new class of point-of-care (POC) diagnostics that will be easy to use, low cost and otherwise appropriate so that these new tools achieve significant impact and rapid uptake in resource-poor settings. POC diagnostics are not only intended to be used in a laboratory or clinic by a trained user. They also need to be operated by minimally trained community health workers in limited infrastructure settings. The platform we envision will have the ability to assess multiple pathogens and health conditions using a set of common technical, logistical, and medical decision-making approaches. The combination of 1) a point of decision test, and; 2) a common platform, will ultimately result in better health outcomes.
Title: Finding Answers: Disparities Research for Change
Sponsor: Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
URL: http://www.rwjf.org/applications/solicited/cfp.jsp?ID=20941
Deadline: Feb. 4, 2010 (preliminary proposal). Optional conference calls on January 6 and 8.
Amount: up to $400,000 over three years
Eligibility: Only organizations that administer and directly provide an intervention to the target population are eligible to apply. Eligible institutions may partner/subcontract with academic or research groups with evaluation expertise.
Abstract: The program is focused on evaluating projects or initiatives that are under way in a variety of health care settings, such as clinics and hospitals, in order to determine what works-and what does not work-to reduce racial and ethnic health care disparities. Specifically, grants awarded through the program are used to evaluate interventions and their potential for real-world implementation.
At a minimum, proposals must:
- Involve health care delivery for one or more of the following health concerns:
- Cardiovascular disease
- Depression
- Diabetes
- Be able to execute the intervention and evaluation in three or more distinct sites.
- Include the collection and reporting of patient-level data by race and ethnicity. Characterization of ethnic subgroups is encouraged where the study population and sample size justifies this subdivision, for instance, breaking out Hispanic patient populations having Mexican and Puerto Rican heritage or by stating whether an Asian-American population is Chinese or Korean in origin.

Title: Clinical Scholars
Sponsor: Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
URL: http://www.rwjf.org/applications/solicited/cfp.jsp?ID=20912
Deadline: February 26, 2010
Amount: $120,000 over two years
Eligibility: M.D., U.S. citizen or permanent resident, must intend to complete clinical requirements of residency by July 1, 2011
Abstract: The goal of the program is to integrate scholars' clinical expertise with training in program development and research methods to help them find solutions for the challenges posed by the U.S. health care system and the health of U.S. communities. The program offers master's degree graduate-level study and research in a university-based, post-residency training program. The Clinical Scholars program generally involves two years of study with generous protected time for research. Interested scholars will be considered for a limited number of opportunities for a third year of support. Scholars train at one of the following participating institutions: the University of California, Los Angeles; the University of Michigan; the University of Pennsylvania; and Yale University.
