NASA Instrument Incubator Program

The Instrument Incubator Program (IIP) fundsinnovative technologies that lead directly to new
Earth observing instruments, sensors, and systems in support of the Science Mission
Directorate’s (SMD) Earth Science Division (ESD). The technologies/measurement concepts
developed under the IIP may extend up through field demonstrations with a longer-term aim for
infusion into future ESD research and flight programs. NASA’s Earth Science Technology
Office (ESTO) manages the development of a range of advanced technology investments to
support future Earth science measurements and activities.

1.1.1 Goals of the Instrument Incubator Program
The goals of the IIP are to research, develop and, demonstrate new measurement technologies
that:
• Enable new Earth observation measurements and
• Reduce the risk, cost, size, volume, mass, and development time of Earth observing
instruments.

The IIP is envisioned to be flexible enough to accept new instrument and measurement concepts.
Through appropriate risk reduction activities the IIP seeks to advance the system's technology
readiness to the level necessary to compete successfully in future science solicitations or space
flight demonstrations.
