About Shaffer Grants

Shaffer Grants are 1-year grants awarded in the amount of $40,000. Researchers interested in applying for a Shaffer Grant can submit an online Preliminary Proposal Form here:

This link will be active from June 1 until July 31.
Glaucoma Research Foundation (GRF) does not accept unsolicited grant applications. Applications mailed to our office will not be reviewed or returned.
Preliminary Proposals are reviewed by our Scientific Advisory Committee. Applicants are notified via email about the status of their proposals in early September. Authors of proposals deemed to have scientific merit will receive an email with instructions for completing and submitting our full online grant application, which will be due before midnight of September 30 Pacific Time.
Prior year grant recipients wishing to apply for a second year of funding must follow the same procedures as first year applicants. GRF will not award grants for more than two consecutive years.
Grant applicants must possess at least a graduate degree. Interdisciplinary teams and collaborations that may lead to new glaucoma treatments are encouraged.
Glaucoma Research Foundation must be acknowledged in papers and abstracts resulting fromGRF-funded research.

Restrictions

  • Equipment exceeding $12,000; waivers may be granted on a case-by-case basis
  • Salaries for principal investigators and co-investigators
  • Projects with overt commercial applications
  • Lab supplies
  • Indirect costs
