Half of All Papers Now Free in Some Form, Study Claims

In 2011, for the first time, 50% of recent scientific papers became freely available though some kind of "open-access" journal or website, a new study commissioned by the European Union concludes. That could mark a tipping point in scientific publishing, and a major landmark for advocates of open access. But some observers are skeptical of the study's methods and results.
