United States Partnering Awards

Call opens: 23 September 2013
Application deadline: 27 November 2013

Aim

  • To set up partnership links between UK and overseas laboratories
  • To promote the exchange of scientists, particularly early career scientists
  • To promote access to facilities

Scope

  • Funds can only be used for travel, subsistence and other activities, such as workshops or exchanges. They are not to fund salary costs, consumables, items of equipment or other research costs, nor to link ongoing single collaborative projects
  • Typically up to £50k over a 4-year period for partnerships with 1 or more US life science laboratories
  • Research groups should try and access other sources of funding in addition to the Partnering Award
  • US partners may wish to explore mutual funding from the following agencies, which have signed formal agreements with BBSRC:
    • National Science Foundation (NSF)
    • National Institutes of Health (NIH)
    • Department of Energy (DoE)
    • United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)

Assessment criteria

Applications are reviewed internally against the following criteria:
  • The value added to BBSRC science through the partnership by enhancing priority areas
  • The benefits and future joint research likely to accrue from the collaboration
  • The uniqueness of the opportunity and expertise of the US partners
  • The opportunities for early career scientist exchanges
  • Whether the collaboration is a new linkage or an ongoing partnership (if collaboration is ongoing, what new aspects are brought to the partnership)
  • The level of the contribution made by the UK institution towards the development of the award
  • Alignment of the award to current BBSRC strategy priorities

Eligibility

  • Open to current BBSRC research grant holders and researchers employed at National Institutes of Bioscience who are in receipt of BBSRC funding (see guidance notes in downloads)
  • UK consortia of academics may apply, with one person acting as the lead
