Link Foundation Energy Program Guidelines

Eligibility

• The applicant must be working toward a Ph.D. in an academic institution. (Please note that the applicant must be accepted in a Ph.D. program.)
• No limitations have been placed on citizenship.
• Fellowships are only tenable at U.S. and Canadian Universities.

The Award

The award consists of a two-year fellowship of $27,000 per year for two years (total of $54,000) to be used for the Fellow's academic year and summer stipend. Funding for year 2 is not evaluated competitively, but is contingent upon satisfactory progress in year 1.

Charges not considered legitimate (as examples) include: tuition, summer salary or other compensation for the research director, pooled or overhead costs, and salary for support staff (e.g., secretarial or clerical help). It is expected that the Fellow's institution will waive or assume tuition charges, and that the Fellow will be enrolled on a full-time basis for the duration of this award. Second year support is contingent upon a letter of endorsement signed by the Fellow's research advisor and departmental chair to be received by March 15 of the first year of the fellowship. Fellows will be required to prepare a formal report describing their activities due by September 1 following the expiration of the fellowship.

Evaluation

Applications will be evaluated by a panel of experts in the energy field. Criteria for evaluation are as follows:

1. The project. Is it innovative? Is it technically sound? Does it offer potential for significant impacts on societal energy supply and utilization? Other criteria as appropriate.
2. The candidate. Important criteria include intellectual ability and achievement, evidence of creativity and initiative, and potential for a career that will impact energy supply and utilization.

Preference will be given to candidates who have a well-defined thesis direction but who still have enough time remaining working toward their Ph.D. that receipt of a Link Foundation Fellowship could make a difference.
