Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation Cancer Research Fund
Deadline March 15, 2011
Award stipends are $50,000 for level I and $60,000 for level II in the first year. In the second year, award stipends are $50,000 for level I and $60,000 for level II. Third year stipends are $50,000 and $60,000 respectively.
The foundation sponsors theoretical and experimental research relevant to the study of cancer and the search for cancer causes, mechanisms, therapies, and prevention. These scholarships are offered to encourage promising young investigators to pursue careers in cancer research.
The proposed investigation must be conducted at a university, hospital, or research institution. Postdoctoral training in the same institution in which the applicant received their degree is discouraged, particularly if it was in the same department.
Eligibility Awards are made to institutions for the support of the fellow under direct supervision of the Sponsor.
Applicants must have completed one or more of the following degrees or its equivalent: M.D., Ph.D., D.D.S., or D.V.M.
For level one funding, basic and physician scientist applicants must have received their degrees no more than one year prior to the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) meeting at which their applications are to be considered. D.V.M. applicants must have received their degrees no more than three years prior to the SAC meeting. For level two funding, physician scientists (M.D., D.D.S., D.V.M. or the equivalent) must have completed their residencies and clinical training no more than three years prior to the SAC meeting at which their applications are to be considered.
Candidates applying to work in foreign-based or United States government laboratories may be awarded a fellowship if they are considered to be especially meritorious or if the program represents an unusual opportunity for postdoctoral training. Foreign candidates may apply to do their research only in the United States. Only candidates who are beginning their first full-time postdoctoral research fellowship are eligible.
Only one fellowship application will be accepted from a sponsor or fellow per review session; there is no limit, however, to the number of applications from an institution.
No more than two Damon Runyon-Walter Winchell Fellows will be funded to work with the same sponsor at any given time.
